INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION IN THE IRISH CONTEXT

Published on 3 May 2024 at 17:28

Managing  migrants, refugees and asylum seekers have become a central agenda in the Irish public discourse lately, with numbers increasing and lack of accomodation prevalent, there is a little chance of finding amicable solutions.

With increased number of people seeking asyslum in Ireland, the discourse is not always positive. you will see slongs like ' IRELAND IS FULL'  and other anti-migrant rthetotic. sometimes anti-migrant groups organise demonstrations.

Migrant Camps at the IPO

Accomodation is among the biggest challenges that migrants, refugees and asylum seekers face in Ireland. in recent times it has become a national issue with major ramifications. for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers there is not an easy option but to sleep rough. with 13,000 Asylum applications in 2023 and 6,000 so far in 2024, there is no solution on site.

In recent months, migrants have been sleeping rough beside the IPO as the state struggles to source enough accommodation for people seeking asylum.

On Wednesday, the Government said it had moved the camping asylum seekers to international protection facilities at the Citywest hotel and at a site at Crooksling in Co Dublin. there are reports of migrants and refugees sleeping rough in other parts of Dublin as well.

Rwanda Plan and its Impact on Irish Asylum applications

Ireland and UK share common Travel area, ensuring free movement of people between the two Islands, however with the ratifications of the Rwanda scheme there has been an increase Asylum applications in Ireland, currently at 6,000.The Irish government claimed that 80% of the new applications are from the UK - people affected by the Scheme. in 2020 both countries agreed to return migrants who claim asylum in one of the countries and then come to the other country as part of the common travel area. due to UK politics and the fact that Rwanda scheme is in full swing, the UK governement refuses any return of the alleged migrants from Ireland, equally Ireland is in the middle of elections, in june this year european elections are due and next year is general election, so the question of rights and accomodation is currently fraught with a coctail of internal politics, rising immigration phobia and appeasing the general public on the issue of migration. we will see how it goes!
